Beaches

Although we’re inland, the beaches are only half an hour or so away. The Norfolk and Suffolk coast is famous for its wildlife and both the National Trust and RSPB own land along the coast.  It’s hard to choose favourites so here area a few highlights:

Southwold / Walberswick / Dunwich – this area is our number one place to visit when we want to escape for an afternoon with the dogs.  We particularly like to jump on the row boat ferry from Walberswick over to Southwold to grab fish and chips after a run on the beach.

On one side of Walberwich is Dunwich where you’ll find the beach and some woodland too, a beautiful place for a walk. The beach is stone so can give you a work out whilst you walk! for a beach walk we prefer Walberswick.

Southwold main town and pier has a big car park, although there are restrictions on the Southwold beach for dogs during the summer but they can go onto the pier with you, The pier has a lovely old fashioned arcade and a couple of cafes. Southwold town is a nice place to walk around with plenty of shops if you’re looking for some retail therapy. You’ll also find the Adnams Brewery in Southwold where you can take a tour and experience some of their products.

Gorleston-on-sea.  A beautiful big sandy beach with shops and cafes at one end.  There are also a few Banksy’s to look out for in this area.

Kessingland – more remote but close by campsites so places to eat as well as a big stoney beach.

If you’re happy to drive a little further (approx. 1hr) then the East Norfolk coast around Winterton and Sea Palling are very nice and has lots of wildlife.  Seals can often be seen along this coast.

Cromer, Sheringham and Weybourne are just over an hour away too. If you like a long walk along the coast you can walk from Weybourne beach along the cliffs to Sheringham. Alternatively park in Holt (1 hour away) at the North Norfolk Railway and take the train to Sheringham where you can spend the day walking around before catching the steam train back to Holt.
